Founded in 1850, the University of Dayton is Ohio's largest independent
university and one of the nation's 10 largest Catholic universities. It
has received national recognition for its quality of education,
affordability and commitment to graduating students "who can make a
difference."
The University of Dayton's impressive 110-acre campus is located in a
residential neighborhood two miles from downtown Dayton, where the
campus and curriculum continue to undergo changes as part of the
University's ambitious "Vision 2005" strategic plan.
One cornerstone of that plan is the creation of a "Learning Village,"
which connects all students through a state-of-the-art electronic
network while promoting collaboration and community building. These
values have characterized a UD education throughout its nearly 150-year
history.
The Donoher Basketball Center, a major addition to the UD Arena giving
UD a premier basketball facility for both playing and training, was
dedicated in 1998, joining a new, high-tech facility for the School of
Law, which opened in 1997.
All University of Dayton undergraduate students take a humanities-based
general education curriculum, unparalleled at a comprehensive university
of UD's size. In all, the University of Dayton offers more than 70
academic majors, which span the humanities, visual and performing arts,
social sciences and sciences as well as the professional disciplines of
business administration, education, engineering and law.
The University also operates a Graduate School and a Research Institute,
where more than 400 researchers, engineers and scientists perform $45
million in sponsored research annually. It is the leading not-for-profit
R&D organization in the region.
What distinguishes the University of Dayton is its Marianist tradition,
which emphasizes a focus on educating the whole person and challenging
students to be servant-leaders. Students and faculty, embracing that
spirit, work side by side to sand the walls of dilapidated buildings or
to serve meals at homeless shelters. Every Dec. 8, on the Feast of the
Immaculate Conception, the University of Dayton has opened its doors and
hearts to children in the Dayton community at its "Christmas on Campus"
celebration. Today, that spirit has spread in cities across the nation
where alumni give a glimpse of the University of Dayton spirit in
similar celebrations. |
