Qualifications
Joe Belle devoted more than 30 years of his life to the University of Dayton.
The Bronx native came to UD as an education student in 1969 and never left.
He worked in the student development division, starting out as a resident
assistant in Stuart Hall and working his way up to positions with progressively
more responsibilities. As a key administrator, Belle managed the University’s
$13 million housing operations as well as the Kennedy Union student center.
In his various roles, he was a major participant in UD’s transformation from
primarily a commuter school to a residential university that draws students
regionally and nationally. He was actively involved in the community,
serving as vice-chair of the Kettering Planning Commission, an usher at
St. Albert the Great Church, chair of the Dayton Urban League’s annual
golf tournament and a member of the Brown-Warren Business Association.
In March of 2000, the University of Dayton awarded him the Lackner Award,
given annually to faculty and staff who have made significant contributions
to UD’s Catholic and Marianist character. The citation read at the awards
dinner sums up Belle’s impact on his alma mater: "His contribution points
to a career that is marked by his exceptional caring about people. Through
his magical power and selfless commitment, he molds together the seemingly
endless and often conflicting demands of students, University administrators
and civic servants."
In the summer of 2000, Joe Belle passed away after a long and brave fight
against brain cancer. The purpose of this student-created award is to
remember and recognize in others the spirit that he displayed everyday
on UD’s campus. Mr. Belle gave endlessly to this University, and in
nominating an alumnus/a to receive this award, we ask students to nominate
someone who also has given to UD in a very positive way. While we recognize
that no one could give as Mr. Belle has, we ask that students nominate someone
who truly embodies his spirit and his love for UD.
Eligibility
Nominees must be graduates of the University of Dayton, a former
member of a recognized campus organization and current supporter of same
organization and making a positive contribution to the UD community
or the community in which he/she resides.
