Dr. Richard M. Schoen
B.S. Mathematics 1972
|
| Dr. Richard M. Schoen earned his B.S. degree in mathematics from the University of Dayton's Department of Mathematics in 1972, his M.S. degree in mathematics from Stanford University in 1974 and his Ph.D. from Sanford in 1977. Today he is not only a Full Professor of Mathematics at Stanford, but he also holds the Bass Endowed Chair in Mathematics and is universally regarded as one of the leading mathematicians in the areas of differential geometry, nonlinear partial differential equations and the calculus of variations. He received a Special Achievement Award from the University of Dayton in 1984. He has maintained an unusual record in research and teaching throughout the years and enjoys international acclaim for his work unraveling the mysteries of geometry.
Dr. Schoen is the editor and co-editor of several mathematical journals. He has won numerous honors for his work. These honors include the prestigious McArthur Prize Fellowship, the Boucher Prize of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences. He was a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in 1992-93. His vast study of geometry, which is the study of curved spaces, has greatly developed its significant role in many areas of mathematics including algebra, number theory and analysis. The reflection of his image as a University of Dayton Alumnus makes all of us proud.
It is with the greatest pleasure that the National Alumni Association bestows its Distinguished Alumnus Award for 2001 on Dr. Richard M. Schoen.
